We also get this question often. The answer is yes, chimney caps are necessary because manufacturers of relining materials do require them as part of a complete installation. You may be wondering “What does a chimney cap do?” First of all, chimney caps keep most rain, debris and animals out of your chimney. Where a flue is venting gas, is the most important area to cover. The flue gives animals direct access to the inside of a home and is a great place to build a nest. Although the Commonwealth does not require you to have a chimney cap, they do have regulations on the type of steel that they are made of and their accessibility. Chimney caps must have a corrosion resistance equivalent to 19- gage galvanized steel or 24-gage stainless steel. Chimney caps must also have a removable lid for maintenance of the chimney system. If you are shopping for a chimney cap, I suggest spending the extra money and having a properly sized cap installed. A poorly sized cap won’t protect the crown and can even contribute water problems.
