Why Should You Waterproof Your Chimney?

A masonry chimney is constructed of a variety of masonry and metal materials, including brick, mortar, concrete, concrete block, stone, flue tile, steel and cast iron.
All masonry chimneys contain combinations of these materials, most of which are affected by direct contact with water.
Brick are porous and have a natural ability to absorb water and then release it into the air by evaporation. When there is a heavy rain fall, the ability to keep up with the absorption/evaporation cycle is difficult, allowing water to get trapped, spall brick or even released onto the building materials beyond the chimney causing those unsightly stains on the ceiling.
Here at Boston Best Chimney we use sealants made of a silane/siloxane blend penetrate into the brick. They maintain the natural look, texture and sheen of the brick. There is no surface film to yellow or to flake off. Water beads up on the surface and prevents an excessive amount of water to get into the brick itself. The biggest advantage is that they coat the pores of the brick and leave them open. Any water that got in will naturally evaporate out and not get trapped.
Waterproofing is a preventive measure and a good one! Think your chimney may need to be waterproofed? Call or contact Boston’s Best Chimney today for a evaluation.
Note: Any masonry damage of the chimney should be repaired before waterproofing sealant is applied.
